A herniated disc is a disc whose soft center has pushed through its tougher outer ring. A bulging disc is one that has spread outward without breaking through. Either one can press on a nearby nerve and cause pain, numbness, or weakness down an arm or leg. At Limitless Chiropractic in Ballantyne, we treat both without surgery, using imaging-guided adjustments and spinal decompression.
Discs sit between the vertebrae like shock absorbers. When the vertebrae above and below are out of position, the disc takes uneven load, the way a tire wears on one side when the alignment is off. Over time that uneven load can push the disc out of shape.
Our job is to take the pressure off. We correct the alignment so the disc is loaded evenly, and when the disc itself needs space, decompression gently separates the vertebrae to give it room.
Signs a disc may be involved
- Pain that runs down one leg (often called sciatica) or down one arm
- Numbness, tingling, or pins and needles in a hand or foot
- Pain that gets worse with sitting, bending, coughing, or sneezing
- Weakness in a leg or grip
- An MRI that already shows a herniation, bulge, or degenerated disc
How we treat a disc problem
We start with an exam and 3D imaging, and we review any MRI you bring. That tells us which level is involved and whether the problem is mainly the disc, the joint, or the muscles guarding around it.
Care usually combines precise adjustments to restore alignment with spinal decompression therapy for the disc itself. We do not use forceful twisting on an irritated disc.
When to see a medical doctor first
Go to the emergency room if you have loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or weakness that is getting rapidly worse. Those are signs of severe nerve compression that needs immediate medical care.
If we find anything during your exam that points outside chiropractic, we will tell you and refer you to the right specialist.
