Lower back pain is the most common reason people first walk into a chiropractor's office, and it is an area where chiropractic care has some of its strongest evidence for effectiveness. At Limitless Chiropractic in Charlotte, we begin every lower back case with a careful examination to understand what structure is generating the pain, because the treatment approach differs significantly depending on the cause.
Not all lower back pain is the same. A disc herniation calls for a different approach than a muscle strain, which is different from a sacroiliac joint dysfunction, which is different from the postural imbalance that develops from sitting for eight hours a day. When we understand what we are treating, we can apply the right tool for the right problem.
For people with disc-related lower back pain, we combine chiropractic adjustments with spinal decompression therapy to address the mechanical compression directly. For muscle and joint-driven pain, targeted adjustments and soft-tissue work produce the fastest results. For postural contributors, we add specific corrective exercises and ergonomic guidance.
Common causes of lower back pain
- Lumbar disc herniation or bulge
- Degenerative disc disease
- Muscle strain from lifting, twisting, or sudden movement
- Lumbar facet joint irritation or locking
- Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
- Sciatica from nerve root compression
- Spinal stenosis in the lumbar spine
- Postural imbalance from prolonged sitting or asymmetrical habits
- Spondylolisthesis (vertebral slippage)
The examination process
We use orthopedic and neurological testing to identify the pain generator and determine whether the problem is primarily a disc issue, a joint issue, or a soft-tissue problem. 3D imaging gives us objective data on spinal alignment, disc height, and vertebral position.
If you have existing MRI reports, we are glad to review them as part of your evaluation. Understanding your imaging in context with the physical exam helps us avoid being misled by incidental findings versus the actual pain generator.
Acute versus chronic lower back pain
Acute lower back pain, the kind that comes on suddenly from a wrong movement, typically responds quickly to chiropractic care. Pain that is two to four weeks old can often be addressed in a focused short-term plan. Chronic lower back pain, lasting three months or more, usually requires a longer plan that includes both structural care and rehabilitation to prevent recurrence.
We treat both, and we calibrate expectations honestly. Chronic low back pain often cycles, meaning people improve and then have flares. Part of our job is helping you understand your triggers and build the spinal resilience to reduce both the severity and frequency of those flares over time.
Long-term prevention
The spine is loaded all day in modern life, and most lower back problems have a postural and movement component that we need to address alongside the structural care. We give patients specific exercises that support the lumbar spine, reduce recurrence risk, and are realistic to do given the demands of everyday life in Ballantyne.
