Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine that can be mild and easily managed or more significant and require careful monitoring. At Limitless Chiropractic in Charlotte, we work with children, teenagers, and adults who have scoliosis, providing chiropractic care that does not claim to cure structural scoliosis but does help manage its effects, reduce associated pain, and support the best possible spinal function.
Our 3D spinal imaging allows us to assess the degree and location of the curvature precisely, monitor it over time, and understand how it is affecting the rest of the spine. Thermography shows us where the nervous system is under the most stress from the abnormal spinal position. Together, these tools give us an objective picture that goes beyond a visual postural assessment.
For school-age children and teenagers, early identification and monitoring is important because curves can progress during growth spurts. Our pediatric chiropractic approach includes scoliosis screening and monitoring as part of routine spinal checkups.
What chiropractic care can and cannot do for scoliosis
Chiropractic care for scoliosis focuses on managing the mechanical and neurological consequences of the curve, not on straightening the spine. We reduce the musculoskeletal tension and imbalance that develops around a scoliotic curve, improve spinal mobility, and support the quality of life for people living with the condition.
We are direct with patients and families: chiropractic care has not been shown to structurally reverse idiopathic scoliosis. What it does well is reduce pain, improve function, and in growing patients, support a conservative monitoring approach alongside any bracing or orthopedic management.
Scoliosis in children and adolescents
Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is the most common type, typically appearing during puberty and progressing during growth. We screen for scoliosis in our pediatric patients using postural analysis and 3D imaging, and we communicate findings clearly to parents. Curves under 20 degrees are generally managed conservatively; we coordinate with pediatric orthopedics for curves that may require bracing evaluation.
Even for curves that need bracing, chiropractic care alongside bracing can reduce the musculoskeletal burden of wearing the brace and keep the rest of the spine mobile and healthy.
Scoliosis care for adults
Adults with scoliosis often develop pain as the muscle imbalances around the curve become more pronounced with age. The spine also tends to stiffen over time, which adds to the discomfort. Gentle chiropractic adjustments, soft-tissue therapy, and specific therapeutic exercises help manage the pain and stiffness and keep the spine as mobile as possible.
De novo degenerative scoliosis, which develops in adults as part of asymmetric disc and joint degeneration, is a growing concern in older populations. We approach this type similarly, focusing on pain management and function preservation.
Monitoring and long-term care
For all scoliosis patients, we believe in honest communication about what we are seeing on imaging and how the curve is behaving over time. We use imaging at appropriate intervals to track any changes, and we flag curves that warrant orthopedic or neurosurgical consultation without hesitation.
